Pergolas have actually been around for centuries, the phrase being borrowed from the Italian/Latin word Pergula in the 17th century. Essentially a covered garden area or tunnel, and traditionally covered in plants and floral arrangements.
Modern pergolas are made from wood, vinyl, fibreglass, aluminium and various plastics. They have lost their plants and have become a place which is to an extent a sun protector. Of course, by their very nature the level of sun protection depends on the depth of the ‘slats’ and the angle of the sun. If the sun is overhead, there’s little or no protection.
